Concept
Coastal Threads is a sculptural installation proposed for Tamarama Beach. Inspired by the Bondi to Bronte coastline, the installation will transform the beach into a vibrant tapestry of colours and connectivity. With a sunset-inspired palette of pink, orange, and purple; the threaded sculpture invites visitors of all ages to take an immersive journey through the maze-like structure.
The panels are extrusions of fragments of the Bondi to Bronte coastline, framing scenic views. The articulation of edges and forms provides playful frames for visitors to observe and travel through.
The installation is thoughtfully designed to provide narrower points for gathering, transitional spaces, and moments of rest. This allows viewers to engage with the sculpture at their own pace. The installation is intended to be positioned on the sand to provide ample space for play and exploration.
As viewers navigate through the installation, they will experience a kaleidoscope of colour. The juxtaposing colours of the threads against the sand and ocean make the sculpture pop, inviting viewers to see the landscape with a fresh perspective. We believe the sculpture will particularly attract attention due to its scale and vibrancy, leaving a lasting impression…

Technicality
The artwork presented at Sculptures by the Sea demonstrates a high level of technical resolution and craftsmanship, both in its fabrication and installation. Spanning 13 metres in length and rising to 3.5 metres in height, the piece was constructed from polished marine-grade steel, selected for its durability in a coastal environment and its reflective qualities. The structure was intricately hand-threaded by Turner designers with 1,538.75 metres of coloured rope, requiring precision, consistency, and careful coordination across the entire form. The complexity of the work lay not only in the detailing of this process, but in managing its sheer scale from fabrication through to transportation and on-site installation, ensuring structural integrity and design intent were maintained throughout.
Due to the scale (13 meters long) and complex geometry, the design team utilised parametric design and 3D modelling to aid the design development and construction of the artwork.
The positioning required extreme accuracy to ensure a seamless alignment over the curved sandstone wall, ensuring a precise transition from the wall onto the ceiling and around the lobby column.
